What is Life Coaching?
Life Coaching is a collaborative, goal oriented process that helps individuals increase self awareness, clarify, personal goals, and create meaningful behavioral change through guided reflection.
Rather than diagnosing or treating mental health conditions, life coaching focuses on present circumstances and future development. Through thoughtful questioning and reflective dialogue, coaching helps individuals examine their patterns, values, and choices while identifying actions that move them toward greater alignment and well-being.
Modern coaching practices draw from research in positive psychology, adult learning theory, neuroscience, and behavioral change science.
“Coaching is a collaborative, solution focused, results oriented and systemic process in which the coach facilitates the enhancement of life experience and goal attainment.”
- Grant, Coaching Psychology Manual (2011)

The Science behind Life Coaching
Research over the past two decades has demonstrated that coaching can produce measurable improvements in performance, well-being, resilience, and goal achievement.
A large meta-analysis examining coaching outcomes found significant positive effects on:
-
Goal attainment
-
Self - efficacy (belief in one’s ability to succeed)
-
Psychological well - being
-
Workplace and life performance
“Coaching has significant positive effects on goal attainment, resilience, workplace well-being, and performance.”
-Theeboom, Beersma, & Van Vianen, Journal of Posistive Psychology, 2014
Coaching works in part by strengthening self regulation, the brain's ability to reflect, plan, and adapt behavior over time.
“Coaching facilitates sustained behavioral change through increased self regulation, insight, and reflective learning.”
- Grant, Coaching: An International Journal of Theory, Research and Practice, 2013
Belonging Based Coaching
Belonging based coaching builds upon traditional coaching principles by recognizing that a sense of belonging is foundational to human well being and personal development. Psychological research shows that feeling connected; to oneself, to others, and to ones environment, is a core human need.
“A deep sense of love and belonging is an irreducible need of all people.”
- Brene Brown

Equine Facilitated Learning
At Happy Hooves, coaching is often combined with Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) which is a form of coaching that utilizes experiential learning. This combination works in relationship with animals (specifically horses) to support personal insight and development.
Horses are highly perceptive herd animals that respond to human body language, emotion, and presence. Because of how sensitive horses are, interactions with them can provide immediate feedback that helps individuals observe their patterns of communication, emotions, and behavior.
Here are three ways in which horses directly help us, with research links to back it up:
-
Reducing cortisol, the stress hormone
-
Lower cortisol levels are associated with reducing anxiety and improved emotional regulation, indicating that interaction with horses may help regulate the body’s stress response.
-
"Effects of Equine Facilitated Learning on Adolescents' Basal Cortisol Levels: A Randomized Trial"
-
Increased Oxytocin, often referred to as the bonding or connection hormone
-
Higher oxytocin levels are linked too:
-
Improved emotional bonding
-
Reduced anxiety
-
Increased feelings of trust and safety
-
-
The Effects of Human–Horse Interactions on Oxytocin and Cortisol Levels in Humans and Horses
-
Nervous system regulation (Heart Rate Variability) also known as HRV is widely used physiological indicator of nervous system regulation and resilience
-
Research measuring HRV during equine assisted therapy sessions found that participants showed lower cortisol and increased parasympathetic nervous system activity, indicating improved regulation during interactions with horses. Higher HRV is associated with:
-
Improved emotional regulation
-
Reduced stress responses
-
Greater nervous system resilience
